The hottest perk at work? Free food and drink.
Remember the days when employees were happy to have a Mr. Coffee machine in the office, and they could help themselves to a fresh (or not-so-fresh) cup of joe with powdered creamer? And if someone was nice enough to occasionally bring in a box of donuts or cookies, the lure of free food had employees from all over the company sniffing them out, happy and buzzing.
More than ever, food at the workplace makes employees happy, perhaps none more so than the Millennials, who drive many of the food trends and will make up approximately 45% of the workforce by 2020. USA Today says, “Because when it comes to employee perks, few things are as satisfying as free food and drinks – which, it turns out, are also just good business. According to a new survey by grocery-delivery service Peapod, companies that provide free food have happier employees compared with those who don’t get to chow down on their employer’s dime.” We’re talking about fresh, delectable dishes and tasty treats, not your everyday vending machine fare!
Companies such as Facebook, Google, Dropbox, Airbnb, Etsy, Adobe, and others offer gourmet meals and snacks, and have either in-house or third party catering services creating the kind of innovative, tasty dishes you might find at a trendy restaurant. With those yummy options, why would you go anywhere else for a snack or a meal while you’re at work? Dropbox and Facebook have actually hired renowned pastry chefs to make daily desserts. Marian Bull of Bon Appetit tells us, “For employees, all these dining options are viewed as enormous perks. For their employers, it’s a way to attract people to their companies, and keep them there.”
As perks go, free food and drink are relatively inexpensive, but they reap great rewards, such as more employee productivity, more collaboration, more employee loyalty, higher morale, and fewer sick days (and healthcare costs). Not to mention lots of free, goodwill advertising for the company via employees sharing food photos via Snapchat and Instagram.
